Mum taught me how to use a sewing machine when I was young which then set up a lifetime interest in drawing with the sewing machine and applique. My work is influenced by life, British wildlife especially woodland animals and garden birds. I'm heavily influenced by colour, pattern and texture and the birdies? well you'll have to ask Scatcat about that one! Using free motion machine embroidery and appliqué I embellish my little critters with beads, buttons, and vintage lace to produce these whimsical and cheeky little scampsters as brooches, cushions, multi media stitched wall art, decorative hanging ornaments, lampshades and reproduction limited edition Giclee prints. Now its time to come clean about me :) I know there are many creative people out there who are ill or disabled, whether mentally or physically and crafting is often a huge healing, calming process. Well for me the mental process of sewing calms me, fills me with inspiration and goes somewhere towards a sense of peace. However, physically it causes me immense pain. I have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder which affects all my ligaments and tendons which means my skeleton doesn't always stay in the place it should, making my muscles run the equivalent of a marathon every day to keep me together. I'm super bendy. Some people train for years to achieve my suppleness. Anyways just a few side affects from this are chronic fatigue (well after all I'm running a marathon every day!), chronic pain in my joints ( because they are so lax which can lead to partial dislocations, extra soft tissue injuries like repetitive strain syndrome, sprains, strains), impinged nerves( from all those wandering bones), severe stiffness and pain insomnia . I think that about covers it! So I work from home as it allows me to work around my difficulties, or at stupid times in the night because I can't sleep, or when all the meds together mean I can't drive to a job etc. I use splints for my hands to help with sewing but sometimes it all gets to much, my brain and body collapses. It doesn't stop me tho! So the pieces are designed to make me smile, other godly worlds where I can escape amongst the animals and forget the pain. Each piece is sewn with love and passion and I'm sure you can see that in my work. I am also available for commissioned work.
