Born Mary Young, then Ludewig and then Hellawell. She was one of three children and was brought up on several farms in and around Scarborough.
Mary attended the convent school on St Thomas Street, before training at the Scarborough School of Art between 1954 and 1959. She went on to study at the Hornsey College of Art between 1959 and 1960. In addition, she completed a BA Hons from the Open University in 1984 and went on to teach in London and Germany.
The collection of her work on show is mainly from the last 20-25 years. After losing her 2nd husband Mary picked up her brush again.
Her pieces feature scenes from in and around Scarborough with others inspired by her travels. A resident of Scarborough for most of her life, Mary also spent time in Germany, where she was married and had three children
