July 6th<\/sup> is National Kissing Day, so it\u2019s only fitting that we take a look at some of the most famous kisses in art. Here are just a few, from the hopelessly romantic to the boldly taboo-breaking.<\/p>\n

Birthday<\/em> by Marc Chagall (1915)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you don\u2019t literally bend over backwards to kiss your other half, do you even really love them? Russian artist Marc Chagall would probably disagree. He painted this embrace between him and his wife Bella to celebrate her birthday.<\/p>\n

Kiss V<\/em>\u00a0 by Roy Lichtenstein (1964)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Several of Lichtenstein\u2019s pop art paintings<\/a> feature couples from comic strips. \u00a0In this poignant scene, it\u2019s not clear whether the couple are passionately reuniting or in the midst of a painful farewell. We\u2019ll leave that one for you to debate.<\/p>\n

This sensual painting features two women in bed together, a taboo subject in the 19th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n

Considered to be one of Klimt\u2019s great masterpieces, The Kiss <\/em>depicts a closely intertwined couple who look very much in love.<\/p>\n

Kissing Coppers<\/em> by Banksy (2004)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Banksy\u2019s mural of two policemen kissing is one of his most recognisable works because it famously challenged homophobic attitudes.<\/p>\n

The Kiss<\/em> by Edvard Munch (1897)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In classic Munch style, the couple\u2019s features here are blurred and merged together. The jury\u2019s still out on whether Munch is portraying the sense of unity between the couple or suggesting that relationships make you lose your identity.<\/p>\n
